Project Overview
- Life Safety, HVAC and ADA improvements to the two main performance spaces on campus
- Ward Hall’s pianos remained in place throughout the project and had to be protected from moisture, dust and damage
- The building remained partially occupied during construction
This project encompasses renovations to the two main performance venues on The Catholic University of America’s campus. Ward Hall, built in the 1930s, houses smaller historic performance halls, practice rooms and classrooms. Hartke Theater, built in the 1970s, contains a 600 seat event space. Phased renovations will occur while the two buildings remain partially occupied to update the Life Safety and HVAC Systems and make ADA improvements.
The Ward Hall fire alarm system was installed in 1963, and though it remains functional, it is well past its useful life and will be replaced. Hartke Theater will also have its existing 1970’s fire alarm system replaced. Asbestos Containing Materials (ACM) are prevalent throughout the two buildings and must be safely abated. The Hartke Theater renovation will now be executed without interruptions as all performances for the 2020-21 this season were moved to an online format.
