The North Carolina Museum of Art, known for its extensive collection of art and dynamic public programs, is undergoing a significant transformation through the East Building and Museum Park Improvements project. These renovations aim to enhance visitor experience and modernize the museum’s facilities.
This project will modernize the amphitheater with new audio/visual and lighting systems, accessible seating, and upgraded support areas. Approximately 600 stadium-style seats will replace existing bench seating, enhancing accessibility without expanding the current footprint. Additional improvements include repairs to the “Picture This” art installation and upgraded landscaping and pathways for better accessibility and truck access.
The East Building Park Entrance will undergo significant sitework, exterior modifications, and interior upgrades to the lobby and atrium, creating a welcoming campus that seamlessly connects the park and museum. New rain gardens and filtration systems will manage stormwater, while a high-performance glazing system will enhance the entrance. Interior renovations will include a new entry vestibule, seating area, coffee counter, and updated restrooms. Additionally, the Community Arts & Education Center will be renovated to create flexible spaces for art and education, while the Open-Air Pavilion will provide a covered outdoor space for events. The Art Conservation component will upgrade studios to meet modern standards, ensuring art preservation and public engagement.
