PORTLAND, ME – Consigli Construction Co., Inc. (Consigli) recently received a 2013 Maine Preservation Statewide Honor Award for the exterior restoration of the Togus VA Building No. 200, the Main Hospital, Augusta.

Recently listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the Togus VA Medical Center campus encompasses 500+ acres of buildings and natural woodlands and is the oldest veteran’s facility in the country. Built in 1933 in the Art Deco style, Building No. 200 became the most prominent structure on campus and remains the focal point of the entire complex.

“We are very pleased that the restoration of this important Maine landmark has been recognized among the best and most transformative historic preservation efforts throughout the state by Maine Preservation,” said Matthew Tonello, area manager for Consigli’s Maine operations.

The exterior restoration involved demolition and rebuilding of parapets, re-roofing and replacement of deteriorated limestone. All work was managed around the occupied medical center and coordinated to limit the impact to the VA and the building occupants. The result was a building restored to its original grandeur using modern construction techniques and ensuring that the 67-bed medical facility will continue to operate long into the future.

The Maine Preservation Honor Awards recognize excellence in historic preservation throughout the state, highlight the importance of preservation, rehabilitation and adaptive use of important historic Maine landmarks and heritage trades, and encourage the use of historic buildings for downtown revitalization and community enhancement.  A total of fifteen projects awards, a community project award and three individual awards were presented to property owners, developers, architects, engineers, contractors, preservation consultants, and others who have demonstrated great achievement and best practices in historic preservation in Maine.
