Project Overview

  • Behavioral health facility expansion adding 48 pediatric beds to the Hospital’s existing operations
  • Planning and implementing construction with the highest level of sensitivity to 24/7 patient care and hospital activity
  • Utilization of pre-fabricated exterior walls and attic framing system for an improved building enclosure schedule

With increased behavioral health patient needs exceeding available resources, Northern Light Health (NLH) called for an addition to its Acadia Hospital—one of only two psychiatric hospitals in the State of Maine. The project upgraded existing adult single occupancy rooms and expanded the Hospital’s existing pediatric behavioral health facility with a two-story addition and connecting corridor.

The expansion added approximately 48 inpatient rooms, nearly doubling available beds in the existing facility. New spaces also include seclusion rooms, noisy and quiet activity areas and dining space, as well as secure staff work stations and medication rooms. The utilization of pre-fabricated exterior walls and attic framing system supported an improved building enclosure schedule to mitigate the impact of challenging Winter weather. All patient areas are furnished with anti-ligature hardware and accessories, including high-security exterior windows in every patient room.
