Project Overview

  • Repositioning of a 1965 building into a state-of-the art facility on an occupied campus
  • The University’s Film Program currently ranks as the top 30% in the country and top five film schools in Maryland.
  • Innovative spaces, such as VR animation, screening theater, and newsroom to support the University’s vision

Originally constructed in 1965, the previous home to the College of Science and Mathematics will be repurposed to house the College of Fine Arts and Communications and the Department of Electronic Media and Film, as well University’s Teaching and Learning Center. The renovated 220,000 sq. ft. Smith Hall will offer state-of-the-art facilities, such as a studio, sound stage, virtual reality animation space, newsroom and a screening theater.

The project begins with a year-long preconstruction effort with demolition to begin in the Fall of 2023. Consigli will be actively working with local MBE/SBE/DBE trade partners to exceed University of Maryland Baltimore’s small business goals.

The renovation will be a transformational opportunity to cultivate artists and communicators while continuing to expand Towson’s reputation in the arts and benefit the leading film program in Maryland and accommodate the 21-st century learning environment.
